Benchmark - June 2024
Covering the end-to-end scenario process and the changing uses of operational risk scenario analysis, the ORX Scenarios 2024 Scenario Process Benchmark and Research Study investigates current industry maturity and future enhancement plans.
It's the largest benchmarking and practice dataset ever collected by ORX Scenarios, with nearly 90 financial institutions taking part.

Survey methodology
The dataset was collected through a three-part survey of scenario processes and practices including:
Part 1
A benchmarking survey of current scenario process maturity enabling granular self-assessments against the industry and peers based on a new maturity matrix.
Part 2
A process and use survey designed to understand why and how institutions are optimising their scenario process to serve new scenario uses and purposes, including risk management.
Part 3
A scenario template collection exercise to support ORX’s plan to develop industry standard scenario documentation.
Outputs from the survey
- Individual benchmark reports: comparing participating institutions’ maturity scores to the rest of the industry and segmenting them by sector, region and size (sent directly to participating institutions).
- Peer benchmark reports: comparing participating institutions’ maturity scores to selected peer institutions (issued on request and sent directly to participating institutions).
- A summary benchmark report: available for ORX Scenarios subscribers to download below. This provides an overview of total industry maturity broken down by sector, region and size.
- The Scenario Process Maturity Matrix: also available to download below and used to support the benchmarking self-assessment.
- State of the Industry report: published after the initial outputs in October 2024. This paper provides insight into the industry’s main scenario process enhancement priorities along with practical evidence-based options for scenario leaders and practitioners to consider as they work to optimise and unlock the full potential of their scenario programme. Download the State of the Industry white paper.
-
Scenarios for Risk Management report: also published in October 2024. This report provides an overview of uses, benefits, and process implications of scenarios. Download the Scenarios for Risk Management report.
How to use the benchmark reports
Participants’ individual and peer benchmark reports can be used to:
- Assess and compare the maturity of each stage of your end-to-end scenario process against the industry as a whole, institutions in your sector, institutions in your region, institutions of a similar size, and (if requested) peer institutions.
- Identify and inform scenario process enhancement priorities and initiatives at relevant process stages, including scenario identification and selection, trigger use and processes, scenario review and refresh practices, qualitative development, quantitative assessment, scenario integration, systems, and process automation.
- Report scenario process enhancement needs to senior management by highlighting key process weaknesses to inform strategic planning and prioritisation.
- Monitor and evidence progress and developments in your scenario process over time against your current maturity scores using the ORX Scenarios Maturity Matrix.
