About the Capital Benchmark 2024
The Capital Benchmark study provides a unique insight into capital levels. Looking at both the global and regional level, it contains a detailed comparative analysis about the capital held in the banking industry.
ORX has been providing a Capital Benchmark report to its banking members since 2010, allowing banks to compare their operational risk capital to their peers.
Since 2018, we have been collecting the templates prepared as part of the Basel QIS exercise to provide a detailed benchmark of capital levels under current frameworks and the incoming standardised approach. In recent years, we have also collected additional items on modelled capital.
As in 2023, this year’s study will continue to be a two-part exercise:
- Part 1 – QIS benchmark
- Part 2 – Analysis of modelled capital
Participation in either part of the exercise is optional, and participants will receive results for the parts in which they provide data. Metrics collected this year include information on Pillar 1 and Pillar 2 capital, and stress test projections.
What type of output is delivered?
For each part of the benchmark last year, participants received a general report, an individual benchmark report, and a numerical appendix providing further detail on the charts in the benchmarks and reports. Both high-level and in-depth benchmarking were delivered at both a global level and at a regional level, providing participants with tools to engage senior management and help respond to regulatory challenge.
Please note that the benchmark is exempt from the embargo policy that is part of our give-to-get approach. This means that the results will not be shared with non-participants after six months. The only way to access the results is to take part in the benchmark.
How to take part?
Participation in the study involves completing an Excel template which is collected anonymously. The sections of the template for Part 1 of the exercise mirror the operational risk sections of the Basel QIS exercise, with separate sections for Part 2. The template file also contains guidance for completing it, and frequently asked questions. The template is available below for this year's exercise, for which the submission window will open in May.
Secure and anonymous data collection
ORX collects the information confidentially using our dedicated Insight system, guaranteeing anonymity and security of the data. The project outputs are provided back to banks directly via Insight, ensuring complete anonymity of the data collected.
