About the initiative
Throughout 2026, we're focusing on how we can strengthen control practice across the industry.
Alongside an updated and improved Reference Control Library and a best practice paper, we're exploring a control benchmarking service that would allow firms to securely compare the strength, maturity and effectiveness of their control environments against peers.
Why are we exploring this service?
Across our community, firms continue to highlight increasing control complexity, inconsistent design standards and limited end-to-end visibility.
Our recent discussions and workshops also show there's a strong demand for deeper benchmarking insights, particularly to understand where organisations may be over or under controlling, how their approaches align with peers and how they can evidence control maturity to internal and external stakeholders.
A controls benchmarking capability could turn these challenges into actionable insight, grounded in real data.
Through benchmarking data and learning from peers, we'll answer key questions, such as:
Understanding your control environment
- How does our control environment compare to the wider industry?
- Which of our controls are unique to our institution?
- Are there areas where we may be over or under controlling?
- Are there differences in control design or operation across our institution?
- Which risks are most effectively controlled?
- Where should we focus our attention for improvement?
Benchmarking against peers
- How does our control environment compare to our peers?
- Are there areas where we are out of step with peers?
- Where are our control gaps relative to peers?
How to get involved
We are currently working closely with our members to help shape the development of the Control Benchmarking Service. By getting involved at this stage, they have the opportunity to:
- Influence the design of an industry-first service, helping to define how control benchmarking is delivered
- Test and shape early concepts and outputs, ensuring they reflect emerging best practice and are practical to apply to real-world control challenges
- Gain early insight into emerging industry practices, including how peers are structuring and assessing their control environments
