ORX Banking Operational Risk Loss Data 2026

How does your operational risk profile compare with the wider banking industry?

Drawing on operational risk loss data from 79 banking institutions, this summary explores how operational risk losses and event volumes evolved across the banking sector between 2020 and 2025. The analysis is supported by a database containing €674 billion in reported gross losses and 1,292,110 operational risk events.

Headline figures only tell part of the story. Although total gross loss fell to a five-year low in 2025, individual event types followed very different paths. Most notably, the severity of Technology & Infrastructure Failure events nearly tripled, highlighting the importance of looking beyond aggregate trends to understand where risk is changing.

Whether you're preparing board reports, reviewing scenarios or benchmarking your experience against the market, this summary provides a concise snapshot of the latest operational risk loss trends across the banking sector.
