Over the past year AI risk management has risen as an operational and non-financial risk management priority. In February 2025, we brought together senior risk professionals from our leadership community to share views on where AI risk management is now and where we might go next. Read on for a summary of the discussions.
Where we are now?
Most risk leaders start from the position that AI is not new, it has been around and used by many firms for a number of years.
What is new is that:
- AI technology, Gen AI in particular, has advanced so now it can change outputs based on inputs.
- There has been a step change in the potential scale and scope of AI usage. All risk leaders have responded to this over the past 12-18 months building strong common foundations and a core of developing common practice.
Establishment of principles and guardrails
Most leaders reported the early establishment of high-level ethical principles and practical guardrails. Often based on open-source cross-industry standards.
